The standard US carry-on size is 22" × 14" × 9", but Europe and the Middle East are stricter. Here are the limits for 20+ airlines in inches and cm.
The standard carry-on size for US airlines is 22" × 14" × 9" (56 × 36 × 23 cm), including wheels and handles. Southwest and Frontier allow 24" × 16" × 10". Many European and Middle Eastern airlines are smaller, often 55 × 40 × 20–23 cm, and add a weight limit of 7–10 kg. How to measure your carry-on
- Pack the bag the way you will fly with it.
- Measure the longest side, the tallest side and the deepest point, including handles, feet and wheels.
- Soft bags: press the sides gently. If it squeezes to the limit without forcing, it will usually go into the sizer.
- Weigh it with a luggage scale if your airline has a weight limit.
Personal item vs carry-on: what is the difference?
A personal item must fit under the seat in front of you (often around 17" × 13" × 9" on US airlines; Ryanair is 40 × 30 × 20 cm). A carry-on goes in the overhead bin. Most fares allow one of each. Voyagers™ is a carry-on; pair it with a small tote as your personal item.
